The March equinox is a precise instant. The center of the Sun crosses the plane of Earth’s equator, and neither hemisphere is tilted toward it. In the Northern Hemisphere, astronomical spring begins; in the Southern Hemisphere, astronomical autumn begins.
The name equinox suggests equal night, but daylight and darkness are not exactly twelve hours each in most places. The Sun is a disk rather than a point, and Earth’s atmosphere bends its light near the horizon. The date of truly equal day and night depends on latitude and usually falls a few days away from the equinox.
That is the first useful lesson of the season: balance in nature is rarely a motionless state. It is a crossing.
In the past: reading the year in light
Long before a printed calendar could name the day, people watched where the Sun rose, how high it climbed, and how shadows changed. Seasonal knowledge helped people anticipate planting, migration, rainfall, cold, and heat.
At Chankillo in present-day Peru, thirteen towers built more than two thousand years ago formed an artificial horizon. From observation points on either side, the movement of sunrise and sunset could locate dates across the solar year. The structure preserved a simple truth: careful attention can turn recurring light into practical knowledge.
In the present: notice the direction of change
At the equinox, the important fact is not only that light is shared almost evenly. It is that the direction is changing. After the March equinox, daylight generally increases in the Northern Hemisphere and decreases in the Southern Hemisphere. Near many mid-latitudes, the change in daylight is faster around an equinox than around a solstice.
The same distinction can clarify an ordinary life. A single day may not feel transformed, but direction matters. A small habit that is becoming steadier can be more significant than a large intention that is going nowhere.
For the future: choose a direction you can repeat
Seasonal thinking is useful because it replaces the demand for instant results with a longer view. The Sun does not leap into a new season. Its position changes a little each day.
Choose one part of daily life—attention, consumption, movement, rest, or care for a place—and name the direction you want it to take before the next solstice. Make the change small enough to repeat without performance or applause.
A practice for one person
Stand in the same place at roughly the same time on two clear days, one week apart. Notice where the end of a shadow falls and record it with a photograph or a pencil mark. The comparison makes Earth’s movement visible at human scale.
Then write one sentence:
Between now and the solstice, I want to move toward ______.
Keep the sentence somewhere you will encounter it. No declaration is needed. The value is in noticing the direction again.
